MAIZE DISTILLERS WET GRAINS:

Supply of wet distillers is already getting tight for this winter, we can however take prebooking’s for deliveries later in the season. Wet distillers is easy to store in or outside, high in protein, oil and relatively high in DM at 35%. Contact us for more details.

HOME AND DRY:

Grain harvest is well under way and with an unfortunately low grain price and little or no sign of a drop in compound feed prices many farmers are availing of treating grain direct from the combine.

Grain fill in spring barley has been very satisfactory so starch levels will be very high complemented with the 4.5% protein lift from adding 30kg of HOME & DRY.

Farmers can expect an excellent stable, high starch, increased protein Alkaline feed with a 12 month shelf life.

WINTER BARLEY:

Growers interested in getting wheat or barley seed dressed with REDIGO DETER should let us know ASAP.

This treatment helps control all aphid vectors of BYDV, slug grain-hollowing damage and wireworm.

Only new 2 row variety added to the provisional recommended list is INFINITY

This received 102 for yield in trials with good all-round disease resistance good bushel and straw strength

 SPRAYER TESTING:

The deadline for testing your sprayer is fast approaching; the failure rate so far has been low with little being needed to bring sprayers up to speed, contact us for further details and to arrange your test or ring Sean O Flynn directly on 0871272334.

HOME & DRY PELLETS

The harvest is upon us and options for utilising grain direct from the combine are being explored,

Home & Dry is a reliable convenient and economical method of treating grain which has many advantages over other methods which include

  • Harvest window is 2-3 weeks during normal harvest.
  • Grain can be treated from 17-24pc.
  • More than 30kg/t can be added to increase protein content.
  • Grain is mechanically crimped and Home ‘N’ Dry Pellets applied.
  • Grain is covered and sealed using silage polythene covers to prevent ammonia loss, can be fed after 2 weeks
  • It can also be stored outdoors once moisture is excluded.
  • Increases grain protein levels by 4-5pc at recommended rate.
  • Alkaline pH (8-9) provides a buffer to improve rumen function.
  • Less likely to be attacked by birds or vermin due to alkaline nature.
  • Minimal storage loss.
  • Storage period of up to 12 months.
  • Feed rates: dairy up to 6kg, beef can be fed ad-lib.

We have customers with grain to sell ready treated and customers looking for grain supplied so contact us for further details.

NEW FROM THE FARM STORE

Distillers Wet Grain is produced from pressed maize grains and is a by-product of the distilling industry.

It is a highly palatable feed containing 26% protein and 32% DM

Is available in full artic loads delivered

Has a 2 month shelf life when covered.

DAIRY HYGIENE Milk sampling is the one sure way of identifying causes of increased Somatic cell counts on farm. By identifying the relevant bacteria present enables you to make appropriate decisions in combatting future mastitis problems and enables you to select products suitable to combating the bacteria present. We are offering this service free of charge backed up with on farm trouble shooting from GEA personnel.

HOME & DRY We are seeing a significant increase in the use of Home & Dry for treating grain this season. Farmers looking to cut costs on bought in feed are seeing the advantage of treating grain direct from the combine. Also no other product can reliably convert a 60% starch grain into an alkaline feed while increasing the protein by 4.5%. We are sourcing grain direct from the combine whole or treated delivered to your yard for more details contact us.

GRASS SEED There is both a feast and a famine depending on what part of the country you are farming in. Our Limerick/Tipperary customers have too much grass while our southern customers have little or no grass. Wherever you are farming consider Farm Store Top Five extend grass mixes for your reseeding. Three varieties topping the Irish recommended list are:

ABERCHOICE: highest yielding and highest DM late diploid on the Irish recommended list.
ABERGAIN: highest yielding spring and total growth of the entire recommended list.
TYRELLA: highest spring yielding late diploid on the Irish recommended list.
All Grass seed Mixes come with or without clover. All three varieties are late heading.

WHY HOME & DRY

August 20, 2013

Why is Home & Dry growing in popularity year on year?

Simple, it does exactly what it says on the tin.
This is the 13th season for the farm Store selling this grain and wholecrop additive and we are still selling it to the same famers we did at the start.
Grain straight from the combine has always been the cheapest source of starch for livestock but with limiting factors.
• Low in protein.
• Moisture content an issue for long term storage and associated drying cost.
• Grain mites can be problematic.
• High acid load for ruminants when fed straight (grain has a PH of 3.5).

barleyfield

So how does Home & Dry Work?

Grain is taken direct from the combine at full maturity (unlike crimp) 16 – 22% moisture.
30kg of Home & Dry are added at the point of rolling and placed in a pile covered down with polythene for 2 weeks.
It isn’t necessary to roll the grain at this point if there is a roller on the farm and can be completed as required.

Results include:
• The 30 kg Home & Dry is converted into Ammonium bicarbonate.
• This raises the protein in the grain by 4.5%.
• PH of the grain increase from 3.5 to 8 making it suitable for higher intakes and less acidosis.
• Kills any moulds eliminates heating.
• Prevents any mites from entering the grain.
• Vermin and birds are not attracted to the grain as a result of the ammonia smell.
• Alkaline PH provides a buffer to improve rumen function.

crimped grain

Cutting wholecrop and adding Home & Dry is also an option particularly where you need a high DM feed.
It is an excellent complement for beet and maize due to its high fibre content, high DM, increased PH and increased protein.
We have also treated straw with Home & Dry which eliminates labour of chopping straw throughout the winter as it is chopped going into pit with forage harvester and again has all the characteristics of grain and wholecrop discussed above.

ALKABUPHA

October 4, 2012

Many of you are now familiar with the Home & Dry process used for preserving grain or wholecrop while also increasing the protein content. This whole process is achieved by releasing Ammonia rapidly into the grain and therefore produces Ammonium bicarbonate, this acts as a buffer in the rumen as the whole process takes grain with a pH of 3.5 to an Alkaline pH of 8 improving rumen function and consequently animal performance.

Now Fivef have moved the technology a step further by introducing AlkabupHa.

AlkabupHa is a mini pellet which is added to the TMR at the point of mixing.

The optimum rumen pH is between 5.75 and 6.75 outside these bands we have poor digestion poor animal performance and in many cases acidosis

The majority of our forages have a pH level below 4 due to fermentation and high levels of lactic acid are produced, (this is even more prevalent this year with wet acidic silage)  we then add cereals in the form of compound which further increase the acid load.

The animal has a remarkable ability to buffer pH levels by natural process of chewing the cud and saliva production. However in modern production systems this is inadequate and needs support, this is why we feed buffers and yeast in an effort to control the acid load

For the first time AlkabupHa allows the base Acid load be reduced or eliminated before the animal consumes it

AlkapupHa delivers this in a protein based system (similar to the Home & Dry) and feeding rates vary from 500g to 1.5 kg. As Alkabupha is 90% protein it can displace 2kg of soya in the diet while adding the other benefits and as you know with the current soya situation that has huge benefits

Fivef have produced an iPhone app called the alkalator  which allows you to calculate the acid load in your diet and exactly what is needed to buffer this while also calculating the protein level being fed
